Spring brings new life

So we did a thing. First we took an online workshop through Country Max on raising chickens. Egg layers, or as I call them, Breakfast Chickens. We have a few books too, and read up...thought about it, talked about it (actually this prepping has been going on for about a year, we didn't just jump into it) - so, we decided to go ahead and get our first flock going this year.

Just before Easter we picked out 3 Rhode Island Reds and 3 Gold Lace Wyandotte. The pictures above were during their first week or so. They grow so fast! We could once pick up 2 in one hand.

Our little bunny and her mommy on Easter seeing the chicks for the very first time. She was so gentle with them. She will make a great helper!

They really do grow fast! Here they starting to explore 'new heights" or maybe trying to dominate a food source. I'll say it's the first, because it seems that the Reds rule the roost.

They are roosting on the new add of a stick. As you can see, their feathers are also coming in. Don't worry, I know you can only see 5 in this photo, but there are still all six. Rosetta likes to come out of the cage when I open the door, so she is by my camera.

We also are able to feed them from our hands. I've also had Rosetta come up and drink from the bottle as I try to fill one of the waterers.

I have names the Rhode Island Reds: Rosetta (she's the one at the cage doorway), Roja the Brave (the second to come out of the cage, the first to run to the edge and look over....she just looked), and Rot.

The Wyandotte's are Lorraine (as in quiche), Fritta (as in frittata) and Scramble (as in she pecks at a tin cup when we take the waterer off it)

Their coop is up as is their walk in run --- we now need to wait for the rest of their feathers to come on (a couple of more weeks) and for the weather to warm. They will be in their full time home soon.
